Governance From our beginning in 1987, the Alliance of Baptists has been committed to equity in our internal governance -- equity between men and women and laity and clergy.
Four elected officers serve one-year terms, with a second-term option -- a President, Vice President, a Secretary, and the immediate Past President. To date, we have alternated the presidency between women and men. Our slate of officers always includes men and women, clergy and laity.
These officers, along with as many as 40 other members of the Board of Directors, govern the Alliance between annual meetings. During the annual meeting -- held on the weekend following Easter -- all decisions of the Board are subject to review by members present and voting.
At present, the Board is divided into six standing committees. These panels indicate much of what the Alliance agenda is about -- Budget and Development; Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations; Member Services; Missions; Peace and Justice; and Women in the Church.
In the Alliance Covenant and Mission Statement, we pledge to "hold ourselves accountable for equity, collegiality, and diversity." It is a promise we take seriously.
