Over the last several years, the Peace & Justice Committee has worked on a variety of projects and statements. Alan Hoskins as Chair developed a registration process and form for Conscientious Objectors based on a statement adopted earlier. That registration process is included on our website.
This committee as well as the Board, have also focused on ways the Alliance can live out its Mission Statement, particularly this phrase, “To keep faith with our Covenant … we side with those who are poor. . . (and). . . pursue justice with and for those who are oppressed.” In that regard, the Alliance has begun to use Shore Bank of Chicago, a community investment bank which supports low-income communities in that city.
We have also set up the “ClearVoice Network” – a rapid response email notice to Alliance members who sign up . Many of the advocacy groups in Washington DC and around the country appreciate having Baptists voices included in their letters to Congress!
At the 2009 Convocation in Charlotte, the Peace & Justice Committee presented statements which were adopted by the Alliance on Climate Change and Economic Justice. Legislation on those issues is either presently before Congress or will come before Congress soon.
Many progressive faith groups are finding that the Obama Administration and the current leaders in Congress are interested in our opinions, however, with the economic difficulties many non-profit advocacy groups are facing, there are less staff to present a progressive faithful-witness to the White House and Capitol Hill.
Therefore, your voice is more and more important these days to lift concerns for the poor, to lift concerns for God’s creation and to lift concerns for justice to our political leaders.
Please consider joining the ClearVoice Network so you can add your voice to other progressive Baptists and together we can make sure the our political leaders know there are voices of faithful people that believe in justice and righteousness for all God’s children. To sign up, send an email to peaceandjustice@allianceofbaptists.org.
We promise to send only a few targeted notes to you throughout the year. This is not a discussion list-serve, so you will not get too many emails in your in-box. This is a wonderful way we can lift our voices together and make a difference in Washington DC which will make a difference around our world.
