The day before Pentecost I watched a 60-foot white oak tree being taken down from in front of our house. It was the second white oak we have lost in our yard. After the chain saws had stopped and a load of wood split and hauled away, I counted between 130 and 150 rings.

<description>Ana Karim, Project Manager, Summer Communities of Service
Summer Communities of Service 2010 is a reality! No longer a list of tasks to be accomplished, recruitment flyers to be sent far and wide, a stack of applications to review, or a file in my or Paula's computer, it is now a project being lived out by real flesh and blood. As 14 young adults and members of their host churches and agencies start the summer brimming with hopes, dreams, expectations and anxieties, it is a project burgeoning with endless opportunities for growth, service, and life-changing experiences.

<description>Mike Castle, Vice President, Alliance Board; Chair, Board Restructure Task Group
In the May issue of connections, Mike Castle, Vice President and Chair of the Board Restructure Task Group outlined Board affirmed revisions to the Alliance's bylaws. One significant impact of the changes to the bylaws is opportunity for constituents to create communities. This community creating opportunity begins at Asilomar during the annual Convocation. In this article, Mike shares more about what it means for the Alliance of Baptists to be a community-driven movement.

In the beginning, darkness covered the face of the deep.
Then the Breath of Heaven swept across the waters, blessing the sea with all manner of creatures.
The sea knows its Maker and roars its applause; the fish therein leap at the sound of God's voice.

For more than a dozen reasons, my passion for the Palestine/Israel issue comes naturally:
* I was born in Beirut to a Lebanese mother and a Palestinian father. In April 1948, while my mother was pregnant with me, they had been driven from their home in Jerusalem. My father's family roots in Gaza go back to the 14th century.

<description>Tom Polaski, Chair, Alliance Mission Committee
One afternoon when I was nine years old, my Mom came into my bedroom and announced we were having company for dinner. I knew what this meant. Mom would serve one of her fanciest specialties: Her award-winning macaroni and cheese or chicken and dumplings were not nearly fancy enough. They would not do when we had company. I would have to wear Sunday clothes -- perhaps even a clip-on tie. We would eat in the dining room, which we never used unless we had company. We would eat off of real china and use real silver. I was quite clearly warned to be on my best behavior.

<description>Mary Andreolli, Minister for Outreach and Communications
About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as the other prisoners listened. Suddenly a severe earthquake shook the place, rocking the prison to its foundation. Immediately all the doors flew open, and everyone&#x26;#39;s chains were pulled loose. When the jailer woke up and found the doors wide open, he drew a sword and was about to commit suicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, &#x22;Don&#x26;#39;t harm yourself! We&#x26;#39;re all still here!&#x22; (Inclusive Bible, Acts 16:25-26)

That&#x26;#39;s some kind of song Paul and Silas must have been singing to God. I mean to rock the very foundation of the prison where these two daring disciples were held up. They weren&#x26;#39;t just whistling dixie. I do wonder, did they consciously think, let&#x26;#39;s shake things up a bit with this little ditty. And just what kind of hymn are we talking about?

<description>Cameron Trimble, Executive Director of the Center for Progressive Renewal
Mary Andreolli, Minister for Outreach and Communications
Tony Jones, renowned author, theologian and self-proclaimed ecclesial gadfly joined us at the In Good Company w/Alliance Friends. During his keynote conversation, discussed in detail in the next issue of VOICES, Tony talked about the similarities and differences between the Alliance of Baptists and the emergent church movement with a keen eye towards the new ways of being and doing church in the world. The Alliance of Baptists, as we know, is a denominational movement of progressive Christians called to respond to the continuing call of God in a rapidly changing world. So how do we respond to these new ways of being and doing church in the world?
