The Seamen's Church Institute - Ministry Coordinator/Chaplain. The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) and the Seafarers Ministry of the Golden Gate (SMGG) jointly appoint and compensate the IMC Ministry Coordinator/SMGG Chaplain, who serves both as coordinator of the ecumenical partners operating in Bay Area ports and as SMGG Chaplain.
- As IMC Ministry Coordinator, this person serves as senior chaplain, coordinator, and supervisor of all ordained chaplains and volunteers in the Port of Oakland, CA and neighboring ports who provide hospitality and ship visiting ministry in and around the International Maritime Center (IMC), a seafarers’ hospitality center serving Bay Area commercial ports from which several ecumenical partners operate.
- In the role of SMGG Chaplain, this person develops church relationships, pursues fundraising, and performs other duties assigned by the SMGG Board.
In particular, the IMC Ministry Coordinator/SMGG Chaplain:
- Schedules hospitality volunteers’ and chaplains’ ship visiting schedules in the Port of Oakland and other surrounding ports, working to maintain high morale; maximizing satisfying volunteer or professional ministry experiences; and efficiently utilizing available resources
- Develops a ministry protocol with port chaplains, including emergency on-call coverage, travel to accident/fatality sites, and disaster planning with port officials
- Promotes strong ties with port officials, USCG, terminal officials, and security staff regarding security access,seafarer shore leave, and chaplains’ compliance with port security requirements
- Consults with SCI’s Center for Seafarers’ Rights whenever known or suspected seafarer maltreatment presents onboard ships or within the IMC
- Chairs and motivates the IMC’s Mission Committee to identify challenges and opportunities for ministry within the port, church relations outreach to parishes and seminaries in the Bay Area, and appropriate visits by church groups to the Port of Oakland
- Recruits potential Sponsoring Denominations, parish clergy and theological seminaries to promote maritime ministry, port ministry training opportunities, and participation in IMC’s mission
- Coordinates with SCI’s Christmas at Sea manager regarding seafarer holiday gifts
- Transmits weekly chaplains’ log report of ship visits, port relations interaction, church/judicatory events, and critical incidents to SCI’s Executive Director’s office
- Coordinates the logistics of the work and shares pastoral burdens with peer chaplain colleagues, including mutually negotiated work hours, ship visiting, transportation of seafarers, and hospitality ministry within the IMC facility
- Works as mutual team member with other IMC staff, chaplains and home-office staff
- Recruits and motivates volunteers to serve as hospitality and ship visiting ministers
- Visit ships in port to assess the spiritual needs of ship officers and crew, assisting seafarers to communicate with families at home, responding to pastoral emergencies, including the needs of truckers and other port workers; provides transportation of visitors to local businesses; and invites seafarers to visit the IMC
The ideal candidate brings outstanding pastoral experience, ecclesiastical relationships and team collaboration to this position; has significant vocational experience in one or more denominations; and must be able to travel and work such hours as to cover the occasional pastoral crises and other assignments.The successful candidate must be able to climb and descend ship gangways, ladders and stairs, and lift and carry up to 50lbs. Advanced Clinical Pastoral Education, military, maritime or hospital chaplaincy provides a definite credential as does experience in the seafaring industry.

University Baptist Church - Minister of Music. University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, NC, a Christian community based in intelligent biblical teaching, seeks a full-time Minister of Music. Lakeside Baptist Church - Minister of Music. Lakeside Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, North Carolina seeks a Minister of Music. Lakeside Church, affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the Alliance of Baptists, is a Baptist church by heritage, open-minded and ecumenical in spirit, with a liturgical worship style which incorporates the richness of other Christian traditions. The church enjoys a reputation for outstanding music and is accustomed to and appreciates a wide repertoire of classical sacred music. The Minister of Music has responsibility for adult, youth and children's choirs, a bell choir and participates in worship planning.
Description of Duties:
At Lakeside Church, music is considered an integral part of the ministry of the church and of the service of worship. The purpose and objective of the worship service is determined by the Senior Minister and the music shall be integrated into the service in keeping with the objectives selected by the Senior Minister.
1. The Minister of Music shall have direct responsibility for adult, youth and bell choirs, including the direction of the adult choir in the Sunday morning worship service and for the leadership of rehearsals in preparation for that service. The Minster of Music shall also have oversight of the children's music program.
2. The Minster of Music shall participate in weekly worship planning meetings with the Senior Minister, Associate Minister and organist.
3. The worship of the church follows the liturgical year: Advent, Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Lent, Maundy Thursday, Easter, and Pentecost. It also incorporates certain observances of the civic year, such as New Year's and Thanksgiving as well as other special days. The Minster of Music shall work with the Senior Minster in planning music for these special days and seasons before final musical selections are made.
4. The Minster of Music shall provide teaching and training of musicians in the church and recruit members of the church's choirs.
5. The Minister of Music shall be entitled to vacation in accordance with the church's personnel policy and shall be responsible for arranging a substitute to lead the adult choir in the Sunday worship service in her/her absence. Vacation shall be coordinated with the organist in order that orderly planning may be possible. Additional Sundays away may be arranged in consultation with the Senior Minister and the Music Committee.
6. The Minister of Music shall submit an annual budget to the Board of Finance, including cost of new music, payment of guest musicians and other expenses related to the music program.
7. Maintenance of the choir room, bell room and music suite, including cataloging and filing of music, cleaning of robes, etc. shall be the responsibility of the Minister of Music or shall be carried out under his or her supervision.
8. In the church's committee structure, the Minister of Music shall be responsible to and work with the Music Committee as well as the Senior Minster in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
9. Review and order all music for choirs, soloists and guest musicians, as needed.
10. Contact guest musicians and orchestral groups to verify scheduling dates and remuneration for services.
11. Notify choir embers of funerals or changes in schedule.
12. Be responsible for (or delegate responsibility for) all activities related to the communal health of the choir as sending get-well cards to choir members and/or in case of death, marriage or any other special event, coordinating with choir with regard to flower arrangement, etc.; collect monies for choir parties, etc.
13. Maintain and regularly update the church's computerized inventory of its musical repertoire and regularly attend continuing education programs in order to identify new music appropriate for Lakeside Church.
14. Perform other general administrative duties related to the life of the church.
