Sardis Baptist Church, Charlotte, North Carolina – Minister of Music

Sardis Baptist Church is a small, growing, urban Alliance of Baptists and CBF congregation.  Organized 23 years ago, the church has chosen to be a progressive voice in the southeast part of Charlotte.  All of the staff members work part-time and the new minister of music would be part of a collaborative ministry team with three other pastors.

Worship at Sardis is expressed in a free-church, liturgical style where music is integral to its creativity, using Taize, spirituals, global music along with traditional hymnody.  The Adult Choir sings a variety of choral music.  Worship planning involves a lay-led worship development team and the ministerial staff.  The minister of music is expected to bring creative ideas to the planning process, as well as understand that collaborative planning reshapes ideas to the satisfaction of the whole.

Responsibilities – The role requires 10-12 hours of work per week and is considered a quarter-time position.  The main responsibilities include:

  • Directing an adult choir of 15 members,
  • Collaboratively planning worship with the pastoral staff and a lay-led worship team,
  • Serving as a worship leader,
  • Directing a children’s choir of roughly a dozen elementary school aged children,
  • Participating in bi-monthly staff meetings.

Requirements – Candidates should be trained in music and have a bachelor’s degree.  Those with degrees in music either at the bachelor’s or master’s level will be looked upon more favorably.  Church staff experience in music is required.  Ordination welcomed, but not required.

Candidates should desire to be a part of a collaborative ministry team and bring creative skills to the worship planning process.  In addition to a strong conducting ability, candidates should possess intuitive skills for selecting music that fits the capability of the choirs.

Application process – Candidates should direct queries, questions and resumes to Dr. Tim Moore, Sardis Baptist Church, 5811 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270, tim@sardisbaptistcharlotte.org, or 704-362-0811 by January 31, 2012.
