Conscientious Objector Registry

At the annual convocation in Greenville, SC, in April 2005, the Alliance approved a motion to establish a Registry for Conscientious Objectors "to provide documentary evidence that those registered are by reason of religious training and belief... conscientiously opposed to participate in war in any form." Click on the links below to read the Statement on Conscientious Objection which gives Alliance members a basis for claiming CO status per the Military Selective Service Act (50 U.S.App. § 456 6(j)). Although there is no military draft at present, most men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with the Selective Service System. Men who will want to claim CO status in the future may lay the groundwork for such a claim by following the instructions found in "Alliance Conscientious Objector Registration Form." Women who wish to state their beliefs about Conscientious Objection may also register with the Alliance. Download the Registration Form from the link below. Anyone needing assistance with the registration process or wanting to discuss this topic is welcome to send a message to the committee using the Contact Us section of this page.

In response to events in Lebanon and Israel, past Alliance vice-president Shanta Premawardhana put together for the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA an ecumenical and interfaith web site of resources of prayers, litanies, texts, etc. for peace from various traditions. The Alliance is one of the participants; Stan Hastey is one of the denominational signatories. As a member of NCCC dialogue table that went to Palestine and Israel in September 2004, past Alliance president John Ewing Roberts was asked to submit something from the Alliance. He has sent in two items from "For the Livings of These Days." Go to the site.
