The Alliance of Baptists began in 1987 as a prophetic voice in Baptist life. Today, we have grown to be a justice movement and community of faith. We are male and female laity and clergy, people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, theological beliefs, and ministry practices.

We are committed to pursuing God’s justice in all it’s forms. And we do so through shared partnership and expertise, building God’s beloved community on earth, as it is in heaven.

Our commitment to antiracism.

The Alliance of Baptists recognizes that the Western Church has been both shaped by and benefited from racism and White Supremacy. And the Alliance, born from the Southern Baptist Convention, has been complicit in the sin of the slavery, White Supremacy, and systemic injustices. Reckoning with these truths has been the first step in our ongoing commitment to becoming an antiracist organization. What does that look like in practice? We’re glad you asked.

In 1990 we began by publicly repenting of the Southern Baptist Convention’s roots in slavery and segregation and acknowledged the ongoing harm of racism within the church.

In 2015, Alliance leaders began to take seriously the impacts of racism on the organization. Trouble the Water was written and the internal conversations began to shift. Grassroot efforts led to system inquiry, which led to recommendations by a large group of dedicated members of the Alliance. From that work a list of 116 recommendations were adopted by the Board of Directors in 2021 which has been directing our work ever since. As the Alliance has been strategically addressing racism within our own history and system we have also been committed to walking along side congregations as they do the same. We remain committed to examining and rooting out racism within our own structures while working toward becoming a liberation people.
