Founded in 1987,

the Alliance of Baptists is a covenant community of progressive Baptist congregations, individuals, and ministry partners committed to following the movement of God's Spirit through justice, compassion, and courageous witness. Born in response to the theological and political conflicts within the Southern Baptist Convention, the Alliance has grown into a theological home for Christians across denominational traditions who seek to embody a more just, inclusive, and liberative expression of the Christian faith.

Throughout its history, the Alliance has continually reimagined what Baptist life can be, grounding its work in partnership, prophetic witness, and a commitment to God's ongoing work in the world. In recent years, the Alliance has undertaken a more intentional commitment to becoming an antiracist organization, seeking to reckon honestly with both the legacy of White supremacy within the Church and our own institutional life. Like any faith community, the Alliance’s journey has been marked by moments of courage and moments of failure. As the Alliance has evolved beyond its founding generation and welcomed new voices, priorities, and perspectives, it has continued to wrestle with its identity while discerning the Spirit's movement in each new season.

Covenant & Mission

We are a people of faith formed by a long tradition of dissent and historic Baptist freedoms. Celebrating this heritage, we seek to cultivate beloved community, claiming our identity within the body of Christ in the world and our solidarity with all creation. We welcome and affirm all persons with full respect to gender, sexual, racial, and ethnic identities. We hold space for all persons with varying abilities, social standing, or economic status.

We lament that over time many of us have contributed to systems of racial, social, economic, and environmental injustice, privileging some while excluding others. As Baptists we confess that we have cherished independence from one another more than responsibility to one another and have allowed systemic injustices to flourish under the banner of individual freedom. We repent and seek transformation.

Embraced in baptismal waters, we freely gather to follow the radical way of Jesus. As disciples we pledge to wrestle with scripture in community, practice shared leadership, preserve local church freedom, and promote religious liberty.

Guided by the Spirit, we commit ourselves to:

Make the worship of God central in our life together;
         Hold the earth sacred, practice creation justice, and
                     Pursue God’s peace and love;
Nurture spiritual formation and support theological education,
         Develop ministry, ecumenical, and interfaith partnerships, and
                     Cultivate relationships of mutual respect and accountability;
Act to dismantle systems of white supremacy, patriarchy, and abusive power,
         Raise prophetic voices for liberation and justice, and
                     Work to eradicate poverty in all forms;
Establish spaces of refuge and renewal with those who are wounded,
         Listen to and follow voices that have been silenced, and
                     Break down barriers that divide us from each other and creation.

We seek to live in joy, humility, and gratitude, welcoming the realm of God.

Theological Home

The Alliance of Baptists is a theological home for people seeking a more expansive and liberative expression of the Christian faith. Here, women flourish in leadership, LGBTQ+ people are celebrated, antiracism is embraced as a gospel commitment, and beloved community is continually pursued through shared leadership, consensus-building, and deep relationships.

Pursuit of God’s Justice

From our founding, the Alliance has sought to embody God's kin-dom on earth as it is in heaven. We believe the gospel calls us beyond the walls of the church into prophetic witness, courageous action, and the ongoing work of justice, reconciliation, and liberation.

Partnership in Mission

We recognize that Christian mission has too often been entangled with colonialism. Rather than imposing our own agendas, we seek relationships rooted in mutuality, accompaniment, and solidarity—trusting the wisdom of our partners, learning alongside one another, and joining God's work already unfolding in their communities.

Occasionally have new opportunities for cohorts of individuals or for congregations. Additionally, we have a few grassroots communities that remain active throughout the year.     The best way to get involved is to stay connected. Throughout the year, the Alliance offers online conversations, in-person gatherings, and opportunities to build relationships with others committed to justice, beloved community, and faithful witness.

    We host ongoing gatherings for Black Baptist leaders through Sankofa and for our endorsed chaplains through the Chaplain Soul Care Hour. From time to time, we also invite individuals and congregations to participate in special cohorts and learning communities, such as THRIVE for Racial Justice and Beloved Mosaic.

    Many of the Alliance's grassroots communities also remain active throughout the year, offering spaces for connection, learning, advocacy, and support. You can learn more about those on our communities page.
